- Carnuntum - The Making of
- Glimpse behind the scenes of Archaeology Unique world sensation: the exhibition “Making of Carnuntum – Glimpse behind the scenes” in the Kulturfabrik Hainburg lifts the curtain to show how it is possible to let a Roman city come to life for visitors as an authentic, built-up world. The tiniest pieces of puzzle are put together using CSI-methods to create a breathtaking, splendid panorama from bygone ages. Together with detailed computer animation the absolute highlights from the excavations over the past few years can also be seen. The exhibition thus links thematically the three locations of the Niederösterreichische Landesausstellung 2011 in the year before the exhibition and tantalizingly arouses curiosity about the awakening of the splendour of reborn Carnuntum. During preparations for the Niederösterreichische Landesausstellung 2011 (whose principal locations are to be the Archaeological Park Carnuntum and the Kulturfabrik Hainburg), there were an increasing number of archaeological excavations. Thus fantastic finds from Roman times were recovered from areas that had not been built upon since ancient times. All the finds are not only important in themselves, but also for their relevance as parts of a “puzzle” which substantially contribute to a complete picture of the Roman way of life in Carnuntum. The results of these investigations have created the basis for the kind of presentation which can be admired in the Archaeological Park Carnuntum. They give the visitor a unique three-dimensional impression of the world as it was 1700 years ago. Fundamental archaeological research is carried out in the Kulturfabrik Hainburg and one can now for the first time look behind the scenes: the latest results of research undertaken over the last few years as well as a huge number of finds are on display. Amongst other things, unique wooden artefacts, impressive grave monuments and imposing stone statues as well as delicate objects from everyday life such as jewellery and tableware can be admired. Archaeological finds are measured, drawn, photographed and stored in a computer database so that the results can also be preserved for future generations. Based on the results of excavations, models of Roman buildings from the former civilian city of Carnuntum (Lucius’ house, villa urbana, public baths) have been reconstructed on a scale of 1:100 where architects, building experts, officials responsible for the protection of ancient monuments and archaeologists have collaborated. The presentation also shows virtual reconstructions which – as large-scale pictures – give the observer a unique impression of the lost glory of the former metropolis on the Danube. Opening times: 27 March to 26 October 2010, Tues – Sun 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Entrance: Adults € 3 | Reduced € 2 | Children (11-14 years), Schoolchildren in classes € 2 Further information: Tel.: +43 2163 3376 799; E - Mail

- Conquer and Discover “Conquer and Discover”, catchwords that have shaped history and which particularly apply to Roemerland-Carnuntum – a region where culture, history and nature come together in an impressive and incomparable way. The exhibition Niederoesterreichische Landesausstellung 2011 “Conquer and Discover” will take you on a unique journey through thousands of years, will show how man and nature developed, from the ancient Romans to the present day. Technical achievements will be highlighted, as well as history covering the environment, culture, the economy and settlements. In the Kulturfabrik Hainburg basic research is carried out providing insights into conquering and discovery, as well as into conquerors, researchers and discoverers, and their actions and activities over thousands of years. The locations Petronell-Carnuntum and Bad Deutsch-Altenburg will show how (as demonstrated by the Romans – pars pro toto) conquered territories were protected and guarded, and how discoveries and inventions led to the establishment of a vibrant civilization. Römerland-Carnuntum with its great variety provides both an attractive and exciting ambience for all visitors. Enjoy an unforgettable journey back in time to the exhibition Niederoesterreichische Landesausstellung 2011 – Conquer and Discover!
