Phenomen Haydn - maturing
01.06.2009 bis 31.12.2009
Tuesday to Sunday 10 a.m to 5 p.m.
“Phenomen Haydn” is an exhibition transcending provincial boundaries, in the Haydn venues in Eisenstadt and the Kulturfabrik Hainburg.
The theme of the exhibition in the Kulturfabrik Hainburg is Joseph Haydn’s youth between 1732 and about 1750: the composer’s childhood and youth in Rohrau, Hainburg and Vienna, the start of his career and the historical background, as well as important stages in his work which are connected with Lower Austria.
Haydn’s career as a musician was not as glamourous as Mozart’s. He had to work hard at his musicianship. Whereas from the very beginning Mozart was systematically taught all aspects of music and written scores, Haydn’s first contact with music was making music at home in an informal village setting. Haydn had his first serious instruction in the techniques of written music during his schooling in the chapel choir at St. Stephen’s Cathedral. Haydn’s musical roots therefore lie in folk music and Catholic church music.
The exhibition shows the important stages in this process and offers glimpses of his later work with reference to his roots. The “phenomenon Haydn” itself, however, is intended to be the central perspective of the Exhibition, symbolized by the enduring works of the composer, as well as by testimonials of his fame which was outstanding in his lifetime.
